PERKEMBANGAN BUDAYA KOSMOPOLITAN DI BATAVIA 1905-1942
Abstract
Kosmopolitan dapat diartikan sebagai suatu kewarganegaraan global. Giddens mengatakan bahwa salah satu faktor sebuah kota dikatakan kosmopolitan adalah perkembangan globalisasi dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat. Konektivitas yang semakin mudah berkat perkembangan komunikasi, media, dan transportasi sejak abad ke-19 telah menjadikan kota-kota besar seperti Batavia menjadi titik luluh (melting pot) berbagai budaya dan bangsa. Sebuah kota kosmopolitan ditandai dengan hadirnya masyarakat kosmopolitan global yang berasal dari berbagai latar belakang budaya, bangsa, tingkat ekonomi, dan gaya hidup. Kapitalisme dan industrialisasi telah mendorong perubahan pada struktur sosial dalam masyarakat. Kajian ini menggunakan metode sejarah dengan menelisik berbagai literatur sezaman yang terdiri atas artikel, dokumentasi, laporan, dan survei baik oleh instansi pemerintah, individu, maupun lembaga nonpemerintah. Kajian ini menemukan bahwa kebijakan tata ruang dengan menempatkan berbagai etnis dan bangsa dalam permukiman yang sama telah menghadirkan suasana kota yang lebih toleran. Keberadaan ruang publik rupanya dikelola dengan baik oleh Gemeente Batavia yang menjadi titik luluh beragam etnis dan kelas sosial.
